All of us have people we consider ‘special’ in our lives. Members of our family, our friends, and our spouse, all belong to that group we believe are more valuable to us than others. Then there are those that you believe are ‘special’ in the opposite sense. Those are people that you dislike; people that constantly challenge you and who ‘get on your nerves’. In both cases, you have elected yourself as judge and jury and delivered a verdict of ‘guilty’. Because of your adherence to the concept of specialness, you have now assumed responsibility for the energetic well-being of that person. That means that your attachment to that person through your special relationship obliges you to share their burden of energetic blockages and help release them.
You are an energy being that your senses tell you is a physical body. If you could adjust your senses to see the energy body, and the energy bodies that surround you, the world would appear completely different. Who are you as an energy being? What would it look like to see your energy body? Fibers of light are interlaced throughout all levels of the energy body as well as the physical body.
Energy blockages create areas of murkiness, becoming even black in areas were the energy no longer penetrates. The fewer blockages you have accumulated, the brighter you appear. You constantly interact with the energy fields of the people and objects around you. Every thought you have about someone or something sends a connecting light fiber. Distance has no meaning here, and these connecting fibers can reach around the world in an instant. You live in a sea of energy! Everything is interconnected; everything is inseparable.
The special relationship intertwines your energy with that of the person you believe to be more or less valuable than others and you begin to process their energy blockages through your energy system. Energy is everywhere and it has structure. It is also non-local, which means it can be accessed from anywhere. Energy follows thought, so if you think of someone, no matter where they are, you are immediately connected to them energetically. This connection is much more than some whimsical fantasy; it is real!
You are constantly releasing for others as well as yourself. You are an instrument of release for those around you and those that enter your thoughts. Become aware of when you are releasing for others. Although it is a compassionate gesture, your release for others does not appreciably help them. They will replace those blockages that you clear for them with new blockage. Unless their hearts are open, their major blockages removed and the subtle bodies aligned, your release for them will have served no purpose. Releasing for others often involves physical symptoms. Clogging up of the sinuses, body aches, coughing, burping, passing gas, strong pressure in the heart chakra at the center of your sternum, or sudden allergy-like symptoms are all indicators of release for others. It is necessary to first realize that it is happening, before you can detach yourself from their release.
A Course in Miracles construes specialness as an illusion which blinds us to the truth of God’s creation that all are equal. No one is more or less deserving of love than anyone else. No one is special! It states that the pursuit of specialness is always at the cost of peace. “Specialness is the function that you gave yourself. It stands for you alone, as self-created, self-maintained, in need of nothing, and unjoined with anything beyond the body. In its eyes you are a separate universe, with all the power to hold itself complete within itself, with every entry shut against intrusion, and every window barred against the light. Always attacked and always furious, with anger always fully justified, you have pursued this goal with vigilance you never thought to yield, and effort that you never thought to cease. And all this grim determination was for this; you wanted specialness to be the truth.”
How then do we avoid the pitfalls of specialness? Who determines the value of a relationship? Our lesson here on Earth is simple. We are here to learn unconditional love! This love is not to be applied to a few and withheld from the many, but is inexhaustible and for everyone. All of our relationships are here to teach us this simple truth. Specialness is the obstacle we need to overcome. We are presented opportunities to defeat it with every encounter we have. Take all the love and affection you feel towards someone you hold in the highest regard and apply it equally to everyone, including yourself!
